Living Sky Magazine

The album (Hard Road) is a sonically mature
debut showcasing the versatility of Fortier and Patrick as songwriters, singers,
and guitar players...Fortier and Patrick's approach to songwriting is a visceral
one. You can touch, taste it, feel it. Their songs unfold by tapping into every
one of your senses until you can't help but see it through the lens of your own
experience. |

Saskatoon Star Phoenix
Dec 15, 2005 by Cam Fuller
You can get a lot done when you're snowed in. Wyatt -- not a guy
but a Saskatoon duo featuring Daniel Fortier and Scott Patrick
-- have created an album of standards that sound fresh and
original.There are
only eight tunes on this record (the snow must have started
melting), but better doing eight well than a dozen poorly.
Fortier and Patrick share the singing, and both have nicely
textured pop-rock voices with a good amount of rasp -- a bit
Springsteeny, perhaps. A variety of styles are present here. The
disc starts out with funky guitar noodling behind Little Drummer
Boy before going more into a jazz vein with some marvelous muted
trumpet by Terry Heckman on God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Silent
Night has a bit of country in it, thanks to some nice acoustic
guitar picking.
The tone is lighter and fast
on Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, a reminder that the little
ruminant is in a bit of a hurry on his first night of work.
Energetic percussion here by Roy Sydiaha, who also impresses
with the djembe on the disc's standout track The Coventry Carol.
It's nice to see that Fortier and Patrick appreciate the darker,
more reverential tunes like this one in addition to O Holy Night
and What Child Is This? Wyatt is local project but they deserve
a national audience for this effort. |
